I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and now reside in Michigan's rural Thumb area. Education includes 5 years at Ohio State University with a major in English and a minor in Sociology, and a BA degree in English from Saginaw Valley State University.
I received Peace Corps training in Puerto Rico (Outward Bound training), New Harmony, Indiana, and the University of Illinois. My specialty was Community Development. Upon returning to Cleveland, I received a grant from the Cleveland Foundation to establish a self-help agency for Spanish speaking individuals using the Peace Corps principles.
In Michigan I wrote and developed the first Title VII Nutrition Grant and was awarded funds for the first senior adult nutrition program in Michigan, and one of the first twenty in the nation. As Director of the Bay County Council on Aging, I started with a staff of 2 and a budget of $23,000 and after 7 years had a staff of 60, a budget of $500,000 and the agency served over 2,000 senior adults weekly. In addition, I developed and won voter approval for the first Senior Citizen Millage in the State of Michigan.
I received additional federal training in community development in Omaha, Nebraska and Chicago, Illinois.
